Don Giuseppe Allamano (1851-1926) – founder of the male and female branches of the Conosolata Missionaries – formed and readied for departure young missionaries for Eastern Africa. Of these, two priests (31 year old T. Gays and 29 year old F. Perlo) and two lay helper brothers (19 year old L. Falda and 18 year old C. Lusso) reached Kenya in the month of May, 1902, settling themselves among the Kikuyu people. Joined by other young missionaries, both male and female, in the course of the following years, together they set in motion a fast and wide-ranging evangelizing mission of the Consolata among the Kikuyu in Kenya. Drawing on the diaries written between 1902 and 1905 by these same missionaries – truly an enormous and for the most part unpublished source of information, impressions, descriptions and reasoning – Alberto Trevisiol brings to light a narrative in real time of the development of “missionary discipleship” of the Consolata among the Kikuyu, placing in the hands of the readers an indispensable tool for the study of the history of the Catholic evangelization in Kenya.
